My Approach

I approached Blue as an emotional, story-led motion design project centered on visualizing the meaning and tone of the song “Blue” by Yung Kai. Starting with a comprehensive pre-production phase — including a moodboard, lyric analysis, colour exploration, and style frames — I built a visual language that reflects the song’s gentle nostalgia and dreamy melancholy. The process began with storyboards and an animatic, which allowed me to map the pacing and transitions before moving into full animation.

Vision and Innovation

My vision was to create a sequence that felt cinematic yet intimate, stitching together themes of longing, memories, and imagined connection. I explored soft, layered textures and slow, floating motion to evoke a sense of daydreaming. The animations combine hand-drawn elements, polaroid frames, and natural motifs like waves, stars, and night skies — all mirroring the emotional tone of the lyrics. Each scene was designed to feel like a visual memory: warm, personal, and slightly surreal.

Identifying Unique Challenges

Several challenges emerged during development:

  • Translating the emotional nuance of the song into visual metaphors without overwhelming the viewer

  • Creating smooth, lyrical transitions, especially in scenes involving polaroids, waves, and text messages

  • Finding a cohesive colour palette that could support multiple moods (comfort, longing, reflection)

  • Maintaining consistent pacing that aligns with the beat, rhythm, and soft build of the music

Resolving Complex Problems

To solve these challenges, I leaned heavily on visual planning and iterative refinement:

  • I built detailed storyboards to connect narrative beats with musical cues

  • I tested transitions (paper flips, wave morphs, zooms, and floating polaroids) using After Effects tutorials referenced in my research

  • I refined timing through a polished animatic, mapping each edit to a lyric phrase or musical rise

  • I created style frames to lock character silhouettes, colour harmony, and composition before animating scenes

These steps ensured the final motion felt fluid, expressive, and emotionally grounded.

User-Centric Design

Although this was a visual project, I still designed with the viewer experience in mind.
I focused on:

  • Clear focal points in each scene

  • Readable handwriting-style text that feels personal and heartfelt

  • Slow, gentle pacing that welcomes the viewer into each moment

  • Emotion-driven visuals that require no additional context to feel meaningful

This approach creates a smooth, comforting watching experience that mirrors the tone of the song.

Detailed Pages and Features

The final motion piece includes several key visual sequences:

  • Text Message Scene

A gentle introduction using floating message bubbles to set the emotional context.

  • Wave Sequence

Flowing typography riding soft ocean waves, connecting directly to the lyric “you with the waves”.

  • Polaroid Sequence

Hand-drawn photo frames drifting in space, representing memory, distance, and imagined togetherness.

  • Night Sky Scene
A quiet moment under the moonlight, echoing the line “I’ll nap under moonlight skies with you”.

  • Heart Motif & Closing Frames

Warm, illustrative visuals that leave the audience with a sense of hope and softness.

You can see that these visual moments were also planned through my storyboards and refined through style frames.

Conclusion

Blue is a motion design piece built from emotion, music analysis, and thoughtful storytelling. Through moodboards, storyboards, an animatic, and carefully crafted visuals, the final video captures the dreamy melancholy at the heart of the song. This project strengthened my understanding of pacing, visual metaphor, and animation as a storytelling medium — showing how motion can transform sound into feeling.
